Ebonyi Government says it is awaiting the investigative report of Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) over two structurally-deficient storey buildings in Abakaliki.
Commissioner for Capital City and Urban Planning, Chief Sunday Inyima, who stated this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Abakaliki, described the situation as unfortunate.
NAN reports that the occupants of the two buildings, situated at Ogbaga road, Abakaliki, had been evacuated to avoid being trapped in case of possible collapse.
Inyima said that the report of the Council of Registered Builders of Nigeria (COBON) on both buildings was also being awaited.
“When we learnt of the development, we visited both buildings with the teams from COREN, COBON and security agencies, among others.
“We assessed the buildings together and from a facial view, we observed lots of deficiencies.
“The state government, on its own, instituted a panel to investigate the construction of the buildings and it has submitted its interim report,” he said.
The commissioner noted that all the investigations were aimed at unraveling the remote and immediate causes of the structural deficiencies.
“They are also aimed at preventing re-occurrence, as the public should be patient till the full reports are out.
“We, however, thank God that the buildings did not collapse, as the occupants were evacuated without harm,” he said.
NAN reports that occupants of surrounding buildings have urged the government to immediately demolish both buildings to prevent sad tales of a possible collapse. (NAN). READ ALSO:
