By Bolaji Oyegunle, London Super Eagles head coach Stephen Keshi has boldly declared that he believes his team is good enough to win the next edition of the World Cup when it kicks off in Brazil next month.
The 20th edition of the World Cup will kick off in Brazil next month when the hosts take on Croatia in the opening game.
Nigeria, who have been placed in Group F alongside Argentina, Bosnia-Herzegovina and Iran, are optimistic of having a good outing and expectations are high.
Earlier this year, Nigeria’s Sports Minister Tamuno Danagogo, had declared that he believes the Eagles are good enough to lift the trophy. Coach Keshi said he agrees with the minister and his thoughts echo those of many Nigerian football commentators who believe this is one of the best teams produced in recent years.
Keshi said: “We can win the World Cup as those who win the World Cup do not have two heads. “If the minister said so, I pray to God that it is so, as all we need to do to win is to concentrate, be free from injuries and take the matches as they come.”
Nigeria got beyond the group stages of the World Cup in 1998 and 1994 and following the success of the current team in winning the African Cup of Nations last year, it is believed the current team can do better. According to Keshi, the success recorded by the 1994 team of which he was a member, was largely as a result of the popular support it enjoyed from the public.
