Dele Momodu, a prominent member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has offered insight into why the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has not yet joined the All Progressives Congress (APC).
In a recent interview with Arise News, Momodu suggested that Wike is reluctant to join the APC because he wants to maintain the significant power and influence he holds within the PDP.
He argued that if Wike were assured of retaining his authority in the ruling party, he would have switched allegiances much earlier.
Momodu also pointed out that the internal crisis within the PDP can be traced back to Wike’s loss to Atiku Abubakar in the 2022 presidential primary.
He stated that many within the PDP who were disheartened by this loss have since moved towards other political parties, though they still hold a strong connection to the PDP.
“Although they’ve shifted towards other parties, they haven’t fully detached themselves from the PDP,” Momodu said, noting that Wike’s influence in the APC is a matter of strategic caution.
“Wike is spiritually aligned with APC but hasn’t joined physically because he knows he would lose the power he currently enjoys in the PDP,” Momodu explained.
Momodu also accused the APC of intentionally stirring up turmoil within opposition parties, including the Labour Party (LP) and the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), as part of an effort to establish a one-party state.
He criticized President Bola Tinubu’s government for allegedly using state power to suppress opposition, fostering division among competing parties.
“APC is fearful of opposition, and they are orchestrating crises within these parties, especially the PDP, Labour Party, and NNPP. Nigeria is moving towards a one-party state, and it’s becoming increasingly difficult for opposition parties to thrive,” he remarked.
Momodu concluded by stating that Wike’s power is still dependent on his backing from the ruling government, adding that even Tinubu acknowledges the reality of this political arrangement.
He expressed concern over the increasing difficulty opposition parties face in Nigeria under the current administration.
