Labour Party is on the verge of being turned apart by internal crisis occasioned by the alleged plan of its National chairman, Dan Nwanyanwu, to elongate his tenure.
However, members of the National Working Committee (NWC) of the party are thus, calling for due process to be followed through a properly convened national convention.
Consequently, the NWC members are canvassing that the National Executive Council (NEC) meeting should fix a date for the third national convention.
The Deputy National Secretary, Babatunde Ayelabola, in a letter addressed to the National Chairman and made available to newsmen in Abuja, requested for the needful to be done, warning of dire consequences of his alleged tenure elongation bid.
According to Ayelabola, it would be four years since the second convention of the party where he was returned to run for a second term was held, having been elected on February 2004 at the first convention.
He said he was constrained to point out what he described as obvious, saying all well-meaning party members should by now be looking forward to the convocation of the third party convention and Nwanyanwu handing over as the national chairman after spending almost a decade in that office.
The Deputy National Scribe also added that he was bothered that Nwanyanwu was ambivalent when the issue was raised at the last NWC meeting of the party.
“This is the more reason why you should leave when the ovation is loudest and with your track record intact.
“There will always be sycophants who will tell you that ‘no one but you’ at the detriment of your good name. They are like the sirens to Odysseus and are best kept at bay.
“There are ways in which the party could continue to tap from your wealth of experience and goodwill that are honourable.
“It is in this light that I proposed earlier that a Board of Trustees could be constituted wherein you could continue as a leader you so choose and it is democratically assented to by the party,”the letter reads in part.
