To foster healthy relationship between students/communities and the state, the Ogun government has revealed plans to set up a Police-Students Community Relations Committee to address issues concerning students in the state.
The Special Adviser to Gov. Dapo Abiodun on Student Matters, Azeez Adeyemi, disclosed this during his campus tour to the Ogun State Institute of Technology (OGITECH), Igbesa on Wednesday.
According to Adeyemi, the committee will be made up of representatives of Ogun police command, leadership of Students’ Union Government (SUG) of tertiary institutions, members of institutions’ host communities and representatives of government.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Adeyemi met with the students of OGITECH, leaders of the community development association (CDA) of the school, representatives of the state police command and the school management.
He opined that the committee would be charged with the responsibility of peacefully resolving crises among students, school communities and the government.
The special adviser reiterated Abiodun’s commitment to the development of education, saying that education remained key sector in the overall development of the state.
He commended the governor for his support to students in the state, adding that the committee would serve as a veritable platform to bring the students and school managements closer to government.
“We are lucky to have a governor who has the interest of students at heart; a leader who is not only concerned about the welfare of students but also committed to alleviating their sufferings.
“I considered it necessary to embark on this campus-to-campus tour in order for this administration to have first-hand information about the real issues and challenges confronting students in the state.
He urged leaders of the communities to see the students as their children and cultivate a good relationship with them, saying that they should continue to accommodate the students, irrespective of their shortcomings.
Speaking on behalf of the students, the SUG President of OGITECH, Ogunleye Eniola, called on the government to come to the aid of the school by providing regular power supply and equipping their medical centre.
The Rector of the polytechnic, Dr Olufunke Akinkurolere, commended Abiodun for his administration’s reforms in education, describing him as visionary leader who had the interest of the students at heart. (NAN)
