The Court of Appeal sitting in Abuja on Friday, cancelled the entire Akwa Ibom state governorship elections held on April 11, 2015.
Mr. Udom Emmanuel, the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) was declared winner of the election by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.
The Appellate Court therefore, ordered INEC to conduct a rerun of the election within 90 days.
Governor Emmanuel had filed an appeal to challenge the ruling of the Akwa Ibom State Elections Petitions Tribunal which had earlier cancelled the election in 18 out of the 31 local government areas in the state.
Prompt News recalls that the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Umanah Umanah, had dragged Emmanuel to the Tribunal over the outcome of the election.
Umanah had argued that the election was marred by irregularities, and asked the Tribunal to nullifying the entire election.
