By Gracious Akujobi President of Wrestling Federation of Nigeria, Daniel Igali has given his federation a pat on the back for its achievement so far while promising to do more.
Igali, who has been in the saddle as the federation’s President for eight months promised to ensure that his athletes participate in more local and international championships this year.
“I was elected about eight months ago and my athletes have been able to attend a couple of tournaments. We have had two local tournaments; the EK Clarke national tournament in Warri and the Governor Dickson classics in Bayelsa.
“We also attended an international championship which was the Commonwealth championship in Johannesburg, South Africa. I think we have started off very well as a Federation”.
The Bayelsa state born lawmaker told Prompt News that the federation will soon engage a foreign coach that could help put the athletes in proper shape ahead of the Commonwealth Games.
He spoke further, “We are going to be recruiting a foreign coach in February for the Commonwealth Games.
“He will be a free style coach who will be able to coach both the free style male and female teams. We would definitely employ a world class coach whose experience and knowledge will be beneficial to the team.
“We are in the heat of preparation for the Commonwealth games and my athletes will get into camp by next month.
“We just had new weight changes so I am hoping that we may have a tournament between when the athletes get into camp and March to ensure we have a holistic national team.
“We need to quickly convene a national team now to ensure that we are properly primed for the Commonwealth games.
“At the last Commonwealth games we did quite well. Wrestling won 3 gold, 3 silver and 7 bronze medals. Our aim for this year is to achieve that feat or to better it,” he opined.
