The third edition of Copa Lagos kicks off on December 15 with teams from Nigeria, Senegal, Germany and Lebanon competing for the coveted trophy.
The four teams have clearly distinct patterns to their play, which will make for a compelling spectacle on the Eko Atlantic City beachfront.
The Nigerian Sand Eagles are known for playing a very skillful, creative, free-flowing, fast-paced soccer andwill display a fusion of Brazilian style mixed with African aggressive strength.
The only other African team, Senegal brings to the tournament a style that rides on their physical strength, size and technical execution.
German football has arguably never been in such a strong and healthy state. A cursory look at both the German national team and Bundesliga clubs paints an exceedingly bright future for the football loving nation.
What will be interesting in this tournament is if their employment of ‘gegenpressing’ (or counter-pressing) as part of their tactical repertoire will provide the winning edge during this keenly contested completion.
Football is the most popular sport in Lebanon and the Lebanese team plays an attractive style of football similar to the Nigerian team.
The captain of the Sand Eagles, Isiaka Olawale believes the Nigerian team still has the distinct advantage.“We are able to play with whatever team is placed in front of us because our players are both skillful and strong. He added “the most important thing is that we are playing to win.”
The Nigerian team is two-time champions and their attempt to secure a third consecutive title in December can only be thwarted by Lebanon, Senegal or Germany.
The three – day event which also enjoys the support of FCMB and Eko Atlantic will not only showcase the different styles in Beach Soccer but there will be a variety of other activities during the tournament including musical concerts, fashion shows and beach parties.
