The Centre for Ethical Rebirth Among Nigerian Youths (CERANY), in partnership with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), have kick-started a nationwide campaign on drug abuse and insecurity.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the first point of call was Government Secondary School, Apo, Resettlement, on Monday, in Abuja.
Speaking at the event, Mrs Oyutu-Precious Obiageli, Assistant Commander, Narcotics, took the students through a lecture, saying ,” the campaign was aimed at reducing the supply of illicit drugs among young Nigerians.”
“Drug abuse is when the drug you are taking is not medically necessary, or when it is misused against the rules of World Health Organisation (WHO),” she added.
Obiageli advised the students to resist any pressure that would push them into drugs abuse.
According to her, ” there are many influences such as: Availability, accessibility of drugs, broken homes and parental influence that could push them into doing this.”
She urged the students to seek counsel when they are in a state of confusion, report any drug peddler within their vicinity and listen attentively to drug education.
The NDLEA top official also called on the students to pay more attention to their education as a priority, saying that this was the only way they could be made influential in the society.
Also speaking, the Executive Director of the centre, Mr Chuks Akamadu, advised the students to be focused in whatever they intend to become in the future, adding, ”no one decides to become drug addictive.”
“No one decides within him or herself that they will get addictive to drugs, it starts by trying and influence, you must learn from the right modeling personalities.
“Those big personalities you see on TV and Internet did not just start big, Tiwa Savage and Davido didn’t just become a star in a day, they started small, don’t be in a hurry to get rich, start small.
“Run away from substance abuse, substance abuse affects retentive memory, they destroy the brain, many of those crazy men outside, all get there as a result of drug”, he said.
NAN reports that the campaign continues on Wednesday, Feb. 9, in other schools. (NAN)
