The National Social Safety Programme (NSSP) has so far enrolled 176,748 poor and vulnerable households with 806,866 individuals in Katsina into the state Social Register.
Mr Aliyu Girka, the State Operations Coordinator, made the disclosure on Thursday in Katsina at the opening ceremony of the training of Community-based Targeting Teams and Enumerators.
Girka said that the programme selected 12 local government areas with the highest poverty indices in the state.
He identified the local governments as Batagarawa, Bakori, Baure, Bindawa, Danmusa, Dandume, Mani, Musawa, Kaita, Kankara, Ingawa and Rimi.
He said that the programme was aimed at establishing the platform for effective targeting and delivery of cash to the indentified poor and vulnerable households under the National Social Safety Net System.
The coordinator noted that the National Social Register is established through process of cash ranking, focus group discussion and enumeration to ensure transparency and reliability of data.
“Here in Katsina State, the state operations Coordinating Unit has succeeded in identifying 176,476 poor and vulnerable households with 147,000 being enrolled for cash transfer of N1.7 billion every two months,” he said.
In his remarks, Gov. Aminu Masari, commended President Muhammadu Buhari for initiating various intervention programmes that placed more emphasis on human development.
He said the training is an opportunity for the participants to contribute in making life meaningful.
Masari said the training is a complement to infrastructure development.
He described education as key to success in life, adding that his administration would continue to accord it top priority. (NAN)
