With doubts over a possible postponement of the 2021 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) yet to fade away, the top echelon of Confederation of Africa Football (CAF) led by its President, Dr. Patrice Motsepe will today (Monday) land in Yaounde to hold an emergency meeting with Cameroon’s football authorities.
Prompt News has exclusively gathered that both CAF and Federation of Cameroon Football (FECAFOOT) are meeting with one agenda on the table; the continuation of preparations for proper organisations of the 2021 AFCON in Cameroon without any issues.
According to our sources in Cameroon, Motsepe is expected to arrive from Doha, Qatar where he went to attend the FIFA Arab Cup won by an African country, Algeria at the weekend with CAF top officials for the crucial meeting with Cameroonian officials.
“Dr. Motsepe is expected to be accompanied by a number of CAF top officials, all jetting in from Doha. They will be arriving Yaounde today for on the spot assessment of what is on ground”, said our source in Cameroon.
This is even as the meeting between Motsepe’s CAF and FECAFOOT is coming hours into speculations about an Emergency CAF Executive Committee Meeting slated for Yaounde on Sunday this week to discuss the future of 2021 AFCON.
There has been a proxy push by foreign football leagues through foreign media outlets to get the biennial African biggest football fiesta postponed to allow African players remain with their overseas clubs in Europe.
But CAF has insisted that the 33rd edition of the continental football event must go ahead as planned with Cameroon as the host of the 24 teams participating in the competition.
Nigeria’s Super Eagles have been locked in the same group with Egypt, Sudan and Guinea- Bissau just as the competition will start from January 9, 2022.
