By Paul Efiong Just as the present government under the leadership of President Muhammadu Buhari has been commended for the ongoing anti-corruption crusade, it has also been observed that his government lack respect for human rights.
Assessment President Buhari’s one year in office on Tuesday, Amobi Nzelu, a legal practitioner emphasized the important of separation of powers among the three arms of government as stipulated by the constitution.
Nzelu futher cited some relevant sections of the Constitution buttressing his point on the independence of the 3-Arms of government: “the three Arms of government should exist independently and inter-dependently without any interference’ no other organs should claim superiority over others.
“We have seen many situations where people arrested on mere allegations were either detained more than the stipulated time frame allowed by the law or are denied bail by the court of competent jurisdictions.
“No organ of government should claim superiority over the other, the executive, the legislature and the judiciary, when one organ is pursuing personal interest it means there is problem.”
On the other hand, Nzelu who commended President Buhari for his leadership styles particularly on the ongoing campaign against corruption also advised Nigerians to be patient with government.
He noted that he has not delivered on most of it promises owing to huge problems he found on ground after his inauguration on May 29 last year.
