ABUJA – President Muhammadu Buhari may have commenced consultations with influential Nigerians on how to tackle the rebellious activities of the Niger Delta Avengers.
Late Thursday night, the President met secretly with his immediate predecessor, Goodluck Jonathan at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
Earlier in the day, President Buhari had cancelled a scheduled official visit to Ogoniland in Rivers State.
He was billed to flag off ‘Clean-up Ogoniland’ in line with UNEP report but sent his Vice, Yemi Osinbajo, at the last minute.
Barely 12 hours after the meeting, Mr. Buhari again met for about one hour with former President Olusegun Obasanjo, in his office on Friday.
Though, there has been no official statement after the two crucial meetings, Prompt News however gathered that discussions may have centred around the activities of the Avengers, who have vowed to achieve zero oil production.
It was learnt last week from sources in the Presidency that President Buhari has initiated talks with Mr. Jonathan, who is from the Niger Delta region on how to get the Avengers to cease fire.
Some political pundits believe that former President Jonathan is in the best position to get the Niger Delta militants to stop war song and jaw-jaw.
It is also believed that former President Obasanjo, could use his influence which cuts across the nooks and crannies of Nigeria to rally support for Mr. Buhari’s government in the Niger Delta.
Prompt News recalls that the Avengers have intensified deadly attacks on oil installations across the region, forcing the nation’s oil production to 1.1 million barrels per day, the lowest in recent times.
