There is a very strong indication that the ongoing strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) may end soon.
The lecturers in the nation’s Universities have been on strike in the last five months, demanding full implementation of the 2009 agreements reached with the Federal Government.
Nyesom Wike, Supervising Minister of Education Wednesday afternoon met with the leadership of ASUU in Abuja during which a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed with ASUU.
The MoU was signed on behalf of the government by a Permanent Secretary while ASUU President, Dr Nasir Isa Fagge said he would report back to the larger House on the agreement reached.
At the meeting were the leadership of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and five Vice Chancellors.
The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Public Affairs, Dr Doyin Okupe, on Tuesday told newsmen that government has deposited the contentious N200 billion in a Special Universities Revitalization Account domiciled with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).
ASUU has been consistent on the need to for the Federal Government to demonstrate commitment by depositing the N200 billion in the CBN for Universities to upgrade infrastructures and for an agreement to be signed.
