PORT HARCOURT – Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has emerged the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, PDP 2019 presidential candidate.
Atiku polled 1,532 votes to defeat 11 other aspirants who contested the presidential primary election held at the Adokiye Amesimaka stadium in Port Harcourt, Rivers state, on Saturday, October 6, 2018.
Sokoto State Governor Aminu Tambuwal came second with 693 votes while Senate President Bukola Saraki came third polling 317 votes.
Other aspirants and the votes garnered are: former Minister of Special Duties, Kabiru Tanimu Turaki (65 ); former President of the Senate, David Mark (35 ); former Governor of Kano state, Rabiu Kwakwanso (158); former Governor of Jigawa state, Sule Lamido (96); Governor of Gombe state, Ibrahim Dakwambo (111); Senator Ahmed Datti (5); former Governor Attahiru Bafarawa (48); former Kaduna Governor Ahmed Makarfi (74) and former Plateau Governor David Jang (19).
The keenly contested primaries saw some of the aspirants pledging during manifestoes that they would support whoever emerges the PDP presidential candidate.
He will confront the incumbent and presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, President Muhammadu Buhari in 2019.
Prompt News Online recalls that Atiku Abubakar, contested the 2015 primary election under the platform of the APC but came third behind Rabiu Musa Kwakwanso and Muhammadu Buhari, who won the primary and the general election.
