Barely 24 hours after an early morning bomb blast at Nyanya motor park left 75 people dead and over 215 with various degrees of injuries, there was a bomb scare at the National Assembly on Tuesday afternoon.
Following observance of strange movement by a group of people within the massive complex, it was suspected that a bomb may have been planted within the premises.
Consequently, security operatives around 1.30pm ordered immediate evacuation, a situation that further heightened tension as people were in a hurry to get out of the complex.
Also, security agents comprising the Police and the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps were drafted to the major entrances to the sprawling complex frisking both visitors and workers.
Apart from lawmakers and staff, Banks operating within the complex like the United Bank for Africa (UBA), Guaranteed Trust Bank (GTB) and Zenith Bank also hurriedly closed for the day’s business.
But, the Acting Sergeant-at -Arms of the National Assembly, Ibrahim Ndako, downplayed the issue, saying it was just a mere rumour.
According to him, “There is nothing like bomb scare. It is just a rumour. Those banks chose to close because we have assured them that there is nothing like that.
“It’s just mere rumour”.
