Following the recent flooding that displaced large number of citizens of Makurdi in Benue State, the Federal Ministry of Health has donated drugs and insecticidal treated nets to the victims of the flooding.
The Hon. Minister of Health Pro. Isaac Adewole handed over the items to the Hon. Commissioner for Health in the State, Dr. Cecilia Ojabo in Makurdi, Benue State on Sunday 10th September, 2017.
It would also be recalled that at the inception of the flood, the Minister had hitherto directed Health Personnel from the Federal Medical Centre Makurdi to provide treatment to all the flood patients at no cost.
The Minister said that the essence of his visit to Makurdi was to sympathize with people of Benue state who lost their valuables as a result of the flooding and also to complement the efforts of the Benue State Government and partners in proving healthcare services to the flood victims.
He added that he would also get first-hand information from the medical personnel on what they required in furtherance of their medical activities in the camp.
Adewole said: “We are here to do two things; one to give support to the State Ministry of Health and also to access what is on ground and what else we need to do as the Federal Ministry of Health to ensure continuous provision of healthcare service to the victims.”
“We are ready to provide more support based on identified needs, we would provide more drugs and other commodities that have been listed in the request”, Adewole said.
The Minister expressed delight that the people in the camp were well taken care of noting that they were in good spirit which clearly showed that different partners are providing different social services.
He however commended the Nigeria Air Force for deploying medical personnel to work with other partners in the camp.
Addressing victims at the camp, Adewole said: “We have come to share in your grief and to thank God that you are alive because in other parts of the world many people die in such disaster. For instance, in the recent flood that hit the United States, Bangladesh and many other countries, many people died, so we thank God you are live, we want to assure you that the federal government is supporting the Benue State Government to ensure that you are well taken care of, so there is no cause to worry. We will look after you, and soon as things come back to normal you should be able to go back to your various homes”.
The Minister alongside the Hon. Commissioner for Health, Dr. Cecilia Ojabo, Hon Commissioner for Water Resources and Environment, Engr. TerlumuUtser, the Executive Secretary, State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) Boniface Ortese and other Directors from the Federal Ministry of Health inspected the International Market Camp and Federal Government Refugee Camp.
