Following the death of three journalists on Friday evening, the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) on Saturday declared seven days mourning in their honour. Addressing journalists in Osogbo, NUJ National President, Garba Mohammed, directed that all activities of the union at the chapels, state and national levels be suspended throughout the mourning period. While condoling with the families of the deceased, he also directed all state chapels to open condolence register as well as at the national headquarters. Garba used the occasion to renew call for national insurance scheme for Nigerian journalists because of the hazards associated with their job.…

Zimbabwe’s President Robert Mugabe has won a seventh term in office, officials say, amid claims of electoral fraud. Mr Mugabe, 89, won 61% of the vote, against Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai’s 34%. Mr Tsvangirai earlier said the elections for parliament and president were fraudulent and promised to take legal action. He said his Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) would no longer work with Mr Mugabe’s Zanu-PF party. With most seats declared, the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission said Zanu-PF had won 137 seats in the 210-seat chamber, just short of two-thirds.
