The Professional Golfers Association (PGA) of Nigeria, is set to open a special professional training programme for female golfers in the country.
A statement by Mr. Samson Lawal, the Director, PGA made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in Abuja, said its goal was to promote inclusiveness of females in golf.
“The PGA of Nigeria at its recent meeting of the Executive Committee concluded plans to open a Special Training programme that will qualify female golfers in the country and beyond as PGA pro.
“Recently, the PGA of Nigeria signed a document with the R&A through the support of the Confederation of Professional Golf (CPG).
“The document, titled Women in Golf Charter was aimed at promoting inclusiveness of females in golf,’’ he said.
Lawal noted that over the years, the percentage of females in golf in Nigeria and Africa had been alarmingly low in spite of the population statistics that put women to be more than men in Africa.
“In view of the above facts, a six month intensive programme to train female golfers to turn PGA pro is being put together by the PGA of Nigeria.
“The programme which will be very wide in coverage and deep in contents will be in line with international best practice and guided by the CPG Professional Education Programme.
“There shall be not less than two seminars that will be compulsory for all participants,’’ he said.
The director said graduates from the programme would be expected to fill the shortfall in the PGA pros requirements in the country, grow the game among women population and provide coaching force needed to grow the game among children.
He added that the programme would expose the trainees to career opportunities that abound in the game of golf.
According to him, the training will commence in January and end with the final examinations in July/August 2021.
“At the end of the programme, only the successful candidates will be admitted as members of the PGA of Nigeria,’’ he said. (NAN)
