An Artisan, Olaniyi Olawuyi, on Wednesday appeared before a Grade I Area Court, Kubwa, Abuja, for allegedly stealing N17, 000 from a tri-cyclist.
The defendant, whose house address was not given, is facing alleged charges of theft and mischief.
The Prosecution Counsel, John Okpa told the court that the defendant boarded a tricycle, ridden by the complainant, Badamosi Ibrahim on Dec. 30.
Okpa alleged that while the complainant disembarked to pray in the mosque, the defendant stole N17, 000 from his tricycle.
He told the court that in his attempt to escape, the defendant allegedly damaged the side mirror of one Ibrahim Attah’s Toyota Corolla car while the stolen money was found in his possession.
The offence, he said contravened the provisions of section 288 of the Penal Code.
The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The defence counsel, Tochukwu Agoziem made a bail application pursuant to section 36 subsection 5 of the 1999 Constitution.
He urged the court to exercise its discretion judiciously in favour of the defendant.
The Judge, Yahaya Sheshi admitted the defendant to bail in the sum of N500, 000 with one surety, who should reside within the court’s jurisdiction.
Sheshi said the surety must provide two recent passport photographs, national identity card and a print out of his bank verification number (BVN).
He adjourned the case until Feb.7 for hearing. (NAN)
