Dr. Cornelius Onuigbo, a medical practitioner at the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital (NAUTH) in Nnewi, has been released after being abducted by unknown gunmen on Tuesday.
Onuigbo was taken in front of his home in Nnewi as he returned from work, but was freed early Thursday morning after enduring two days of captivity.
The news of his release was confirmed by colleagues from the hospital’s Urology Department, as well as Martina Onwuka, the Head of Corporate Affairs at NAUTH.
The circumstances of his release, including whether a ransom was paid or if he managed to escape, remain unclear.
However, staff at NAUTH expressed relief and joy upon hearing the news, celebrating his safe return.
A colleague from the Urology Department, who asked to remain anonymous, expressed gratitude for Onuigbo’s return, but acknowledged the psychological effects of the traumatic experience.
“We are thankful he is back with us. We still don’t know if a ransom was involved or whether he was physically harmed, but the emotional impact of such an ordeal is undeniable. The key thing is that he’s home with his family, and we’re grateful for his safety,” the colleague shared.
SP Tochukwu Ikenga, spokesperson for the Anambra State Police Command, also confirmed Onuigbo’s safe release, reporting that he had been reunited with his family.
