LAGOS – A 32-year-old unemployed man, Azeez Wahab, who allegedly stole N3,000, was on Thursday granted N30,000 bail by an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court.
The accused, whose address was not stated, is standing trial on charges of conspiracy and stealing.
He, however, entered a `not-guilty’ plea.
The Magistrate, Mrs Y.O. Ekogbulu, also ordered the accused to produce two sureties as part of the bail conditions.
She said the sureties must be gainfully employed and should show evidence of two years’ tax payment to the Lagos State Government.
The Prosecutor, Insp. Clement Okuoimose, had told the court that the accused committed the offences on Oct. 13 at Ladipo U-turn, Shogunle, Lagos.
Okuoimose said that the accused and one other person still at large, conspired to steal N3,000 belonging to Mr Chukwuemeka Dimpa..
“The complainant was returning from work when his car stopped and he discovered that it needed water in the radiator.
“The accused approached him and demanded for N20,000 for parking on that spot.
“The complainant told them that he did not have money but the accused and his accomplice forcefully held him and dipped their hands inside his pocket and ran away with his N3,000.
“The complainant raised an alarm and the accused was arrested while his accomplice escaped with the money,” he said
The prosecutor said that the offences contravened Sections 287 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015(Revised).
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 287 stipulates that anyone who steals is liable to three years imprisonment.
The case was adjourned until Nov.1 for mention.
