A group, The Concerned Citizens of Nigeria, that has persistently called for probe of the alleged looting of about N2.5 billion military pension fund has frowned at the perceived silence of the National Assembly over the matter despite several petitions written and calling on them to look into the case.
The spokesperson for the group, Idris Suleiman noted that they had expected that the National Assembly would have pointed searchlight on the matter during the last Arms deal probe but laments that despite all efforts to get the lawmakers look into it ended up on deaf ears.
The group wondered how members of the National Assembly who were voted in by Nigerians to represent their interest would not be interested in knowing how funds meant for the men and women who had served this country in different capacities in the military would get missing without any trace.
“It is totally disheartening that members of the National Assembly of Nigeria would not want to show interest on a matter that bothers on the missing funds of our retired military men and women. This does not speak well of us as a Nation and it definitely shows that we are not that serious with the issue of tackling corruption in the country,”
“We are saying that if they claim that Pointblank publications which broke the news in the first place of how a whooping sum of N2.5 billion withdrawn from the CBN was allegedly fraudulently diverted in one day by some top officers was false, we are unequivocally saying that we have more information, with details, documents on how the said money was shared, and who got what. But it is so regrettable that Nigerian authorities seem not to be interested.
“Well, this is the last statement we are going to make on this matter and if we wait without seeing any action from the National Assembly we plan to carry out a major protest in Abuja to drive home our goal. We would not subscribe to seeing the sweat of hardworking retirees of the Nigeria military go down the drain.
“We will not rest till we see to the end of this matter. Whatever it will cost us we are ready to go through it. We are also calling on other well meaning Nigerians to join us on calling on the National Assembly to open investigation into it.
“If at the end of their investigation and they declare that nothing was found, then we will take it that at least an investigation has been carried out. But for them to be totally silent on this matter really go to prove that that there is more to it,” Suleiman concluded.
