By: Akeem Oyetunji If feelers from Vienna, Austria, are anything to go by, Nigeria’s Minister of Petroleum Resources, Mrs Diezani Alison Madueke, is poised to emerge the first female Secretary-General of the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC).
The 165th Ordinary Meeting of OPEC is holding today in Vienna, deliberating on the decision of the Oil Ministers not to change the output target of 30 million barrels per day (bpd).
Also, the conference will be appointing a new Secretary-General to replace the present occupier, Abdalla Salem el-Badri, 77, a citizen of Libya who has been in office since 2007.
Already, her ambition has the Federal Government’s backing as President Goodluck Jonathan has formally nominated her for the plum position.
Prompt News also gathered that the President has in the past few weeks spoken with African leaders who are members of OPEC to back Nigerian candidate.
Owing to the deadlock between the candidates of two major players in OPEC, Saudi Arabia and Iran, Mrs Alison-Madueke is expected to be a beneficiary of the deadlock baring last minute change.
Mrs. Alison-Madueke is the first Nigerian female Minister of Petroleum Resources.
