Governor Umaru Almakura of Nasarawa state has called on the Federal government to intervene in the menace of erosion that has rendered so many people homeless, saying state government is doing its best in order to arrest the ecology situation in the state particularly in the state capital.
He stated this on Friday when he paid a visit to communities which were affected by erosion within the Lafia metropolis, noting that government has earmarked the sum of 1.7 billion naira which was to help arrest the ugly trend as the situation he said is an eyesore which needed immediate attention.
He equally noted that government has taken upon itself to ensure urban renewal and slum upgrade within the state capital ahead of the warning received from NAME about flooding that is likely to take place in Nasarawa amongst other states.
“For this reason, I decided to take a physical examination and observation of all the areas that are vulnerable to such problems.
“We have made this complaint a number of time ecological situation, water storm situation and this is one after so many of such problems I believe before the end of the raining season of the rehabilitation work will commence and we will have a permanent solution to this problem.
“We are hoping to do the same thing to Ungwar Galadima ,Killema,B.A.D Garage and rice mill, these are areas that have serious erosion problem. I believe by next year all these areas will have relieve and a permanent solutions to that problem,” he assured.
Almakura added that already government has made far reaching agreements with some of the agencies responsible for ecological matters and “I Want to assure you that we will soon be on top of the situation.”
The governor also promised to kick-start the constructions of canals,60×60 gutters by the roads side of the city saying that the work will commence by August .
Areas which have become a set back to residents who perpetually live in fear of ecological eruption as that of the flood includes ; Tudun Kauri, Ungwar sha’u, Ungwar Galadima, Killema and Rice mill all in Lafia metropolitan.
