The Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) has reversed its decision to take the 2023 NBBF/Zenith League Atlantic Conference Phase One Competition away from Akure.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that five of the participating women basketball teams had called for a shift in the competition’s proposed commencement date.
This was due to the short notice of moving the event to Port Harcourt from Akure within 48 hours.
The competition was earlier scheduled to hold from Monday to Sunday, Aug. 27.
However, in a letter on Sunday signed by the NBBF Secretary-General, Nkoku Peter, the clubs were notified that the competition had been returned to Akure.
NBBF noted that it was in receipt of the letter from some of the clubs that the notice to move to Port Harcourt was short.
It added that it had reversed its decision and was returning the event its previously planned venue, the Ondo State Sports Complex in Akure.
“I write to notify the Atlantic Conference Basketball Teams/Clubs that the Federation is in receipt of a letter from the Ondo State Sports Council.
“It is assuring us that the basketball facility at the Akure Indoor Sports Hall will be ready for use for the First Phase scheduled for Aug. 21 to Aug. 27.
“In view of this, the League Management Committee has
resolved to revert the venue of the First Phase back to Akure Indoor Sports Hall.
“Consequently, all Atlantic Conference Teams/Clubs are expected to
proceed to Akure for this all-important Women’s League,” the letter read in parts.
The letter, which stated that all inconveniences associated with the changes were highly regretted, was sent to all the eight participating teams.
NAN reports that the participating teams include: MFM Basketball Club, First Bank Basketball Club, Sunshine Angels Basketball Club, IGP Queens Basketball Club and Delta Force Basketball Club.
The rest are: Dolphins Basketball Club, Bayelsa Blue Whales Basketball Club and First Deep Water Basketball Club.(NAN)
