William Troost-Ekong scored from the spot as the Super Eagles defeated Cote d’Ivoire 1-0 in their Group A fixture on Thursday.
Osimhen missed a glorious chance to put Nigeria ahead early in the game.
The Napoli striker was put through on goal by left -back Zaidu Sanusi but he shoot wide from inside the box.
The hosts missed two good chances afterwards through Seko Fofana and Jeremie Boga.
The rest of the half was a ding dong affair as both teams struggled to create any meaningful clear cut chances.
Cote d’Ivoire started the second half strongly but couldn’t break down the Super Eagles defence.
The Super Eagles were awarded a penalty 10 minutes after the break when Osimhen was fouled inside the box.

The three-time champions now occupy second position in the group with four points from two games.
They will face Guinea-Bissau in their final group game next week Tuesday.
