Rep. Dennis Idahosa, a member of the House of Representatives (APC-Edo), has called for more support for the Super Eagles in their campaign for trophy in the 32nd edition of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON 2019) in Egypt.
Idahosa made the call on Thursday in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Benin, while reacting to Eagles’ quarter final victory in Cairo on Wednesday.
He said that the team needed more support to advance in the tournament and possibly win the trophy.
He commended Nigerians for their solidarity for the team so far, pointing out that sports, especially football, remained a unifying factor in Nigeria.
The lawnkwer, representing Ovia Federal Constituency, said the National Assembly would continue to ensure that the national team got the necessary legislative support from them.
He said: “It is the least we can do, especially against the background that sports have now become a unifying factor among Nigerians.
“As lawmakers, we will continually work to see that the best is accorded sport development in the country.
“As for the Super Eagles campaign in Egypt, while we assure them of our support, I wish to appeal to Nigerians not to relent in their support for the team, especially as they have now qualified for the semi final.
“We just realised that the team carries the burden of over 180 million Nigerians and as such we should give support to cheer them to victories in their outing.”
Idahosa urged the team to sustain the current team spirit they had so far displayed in the tournament.
He said, “I will call on the players and their coaching crew to carry on with this same character that helped them to qualify for the semi final stage.”
NAN reports that the Eagles on Wednesday defeated the Bafana Bafana of South Africa 2-1 to book their semi final ticket.
