No fewer than 30 communities in Gerei Local Government Area of Adamawa on Thursday protested over alleged sale of their farmlands by the council chairman.
Mr Ahijo Yakubu, spokesperson of the communities, at a news conference in Yola, said they had lodged an official complaint to the State House of Assembly for further action.
“We have discovered that the chairman sold over 10 hectares of land to the present councillor representing Modire Ward and he is planning to sell over 500 hectares of land including individuals’ farmlands.
“This land is the only one that remains for use for the common man from Gerei town to Jabbi-Lamba, down to Daneyel village. All are farmlands of poor men within the 30 communities,” Yakubu said.
According to him, the farmlands were the only means of livelihood of the 30 communities.
When contacted, Mr Joda Amisa, Chairman of the Council said that the claim of the communities was only an allegation.
Amisa said the land was state government reservation area, adding that anybody in doubt should contact the Ministry of Land and Survey (NAN)
