The Akwa Ibom Government has promised that the state fire service will be overhauled to ensure efficiency and effectiveness in responding to emergency situation.
The Commissioner for Works and Fire Service, Prof. Eno Ibanga, gave the assurance at a news conference on the state of the fire service in Uyo on Tuesday.
Ibanga said that the overhaul would involve recruitment of staff and procurement of modern fire fighting equipment.
“Recently we discovered that almost all the personnel in the state fire service have retired, leaving only small size of workforce to handle fire emergencies in the state.
“Technically, equipment in the fire service have become obsolete and need replacement to fight fire outbreaks in the state effectively.
“I am planning to bring resource persons for intensive training of fire men in the state. I will do it at the appropriate time,” Ibanga said. (NAN)
