The All Progressives Congress (APC) on Tuesday failed to call for leadership change in the House of Representatives on resumption of plenary from Christmas break.
The opposition party, APC assumed the majority status in the House late last year following the defection of 37 members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the party.
With this have development, the APC bigwigs had been threatening to call for leadership change in line with the standing order of the House.
In fact, the Minority Leader, Femi Gbajabiamila had also threatened that his party will ensure the Speaker effect leadership change when the House resumes from break.
Prompt News Online learnt that the APC leaders in the House have decided to be cautious so that the PDP does not turn the table against them.
It was also gathered that the party leadership has decided to open a register for all its members in the House to sign so as to be double sure that they are still in the majority on resumption.
Fearing that the APC could carry out its threat to change leadership, the PDP had approached a Federal High Court in Abuja asking for interim injection to restrain the Speaker, Aminu Tambuwal from effecting any leadership change.
On Monday, Justice Adeniyi Ademola ordered that status quo ante be maintained forthwith pending hearing of the substantive suit filed by PDP and hearing of preliminary objections from the defendants on Monday, February 3, 2014.
According to a source in the Lower Chamber, once the APC is able to verify that it is still in the majority, a letter would be forwarded to the Clerk of the House informing him of the party’s new status.
Upon verification, the Clerk is then obliged to inform the Speaker accordingly to effect leadership change.
Should that be done, all the current Principal Officers of the House, including the House Leader, Mulikat Adeola-Akande will lose their positions to the APC members and Femi Gbajabiamila is expected to assume office as the Majority Leader.
