Indication emerged at the weekend that Governor Rabiu Musa Kwakwanso of Kano defected to the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) for selfish reason and not in the best interest of the state.
Following the defection, there has been crisis in Kano APC. A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party in the state accused Governor Kwakwanso of “trying to compel all of members of PDP in our state to join APC fro selfish reasons”.
Since the G5 Governors namely: Rabiu Kwakwanso (Kano), Rotimi Amaechi (Rivers), Ahmed Abdulfatah (Kwara), Muritala Nyako (Adamawa) and Aliyu Wamakko (Sokoto) defected to the APC, there has been crisis in those five states.
The founding members of the APC have been at logger heads with the new members, resisting the latter’s attempt to take over the control of the structures in the five states.
According to the PDP chieftain, Idris who granted interview in his Dala, residence in metropolitan Kano, “Kwakwanso is trying to lead every PDP member blindly into the APC.
Thank God we now know his motive.”
Asked to shed light on what he considered the Governor’s motive, Idris alleged that Kwakwanso is not of Kano origin.
His words, “Many Nigerians do not know that Kwakwanso’s father is not an Hausa man. He was never a Kano man. He only settled here in Kano after his railway work of those days brought him here.
“After retirement, his father settled here. So what the governor is doing now is trying to
destroy Kano by going back to his people in the south west. He is a Yoruba man.,” he alleged.
But Idris, who intermittently beckoned on some members of the youth vanguard of the PDP in the area to underscore his revelation, said that defecting to the APC will not save the political career of the governor, adding that the truth about “the over-bloated rating” of Kwakwanso would soon be seen.
He also posited that the governor has many other battles to fight from his APC camp.
An aide to a founding member of Kano APC who pleaded for anonymity, concurred.
According to him, “His battles are many. He will have to convince Kano people that he is not a Yoruba man; that he is not trying to sell us to the south west that always prefers opposition politics.
“He will also convince us that he is not trying to reap where he did not sow by trying to hijack our party structure where the former governor, I mean His Excellency, Shekarau has been.
“Even in the APC, how can we vote for a foreigner to go to the Senate the way they did in the southwest where a non-indigene like Tinubu can lord over the people?,” he queried.
As at press time, the spokesperson to Governor Kwakwanso, Baba Dantiye could not be reached for comment on the allegation.
