At last, the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) Tuesday in Minna, formally suspended its over five months strike.
The announcement was made by ASUU President, Dr Nasir Faggae Isa, while addressing newsmen at the end of the Union’s National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held in Minna, Niger state.
“Finally, ASUU NEC resolved to suspend the strike embarked upon on 1st July, 2013, with effect from today, December 17th, 2013 and directs its branches to resume work forthwith,” Dr Isa said.
It will be recalled ASUU leadership led by its President last week met with the Minister of Education, Nyesom Wike, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on the various issues that they have agreed on.
The meeting held at the Ministry of Education headquarters was attended by five Vice Chancellors and the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Abdulwaheed Omar.
Speaking with reporters after the meeting , ASUU President had said the MoU captured the main areas of the union’s demand including the deposit of N200 billion in a dedicated account to Central Bank of Nigeria, the non-victimization clause, infrastructural development among others.
