By Paul Efiong ABUJA – The Director of Training, Universal Basic Education Board (UBEB) Abubakar Dantsoho has reiterated the Board’s readiness to compliment and support programme that would improve the quality and quantity of teachers in the Federal Capital Territory, FCT.
He disclosed this during an induction/award ceremony for teachers who have shown professionalism while in service, stressing that the Board would engage teachers in regular training and retraining.
The event was organised by a Non Governmental Organization known as the Education Development Academy (EDA) in Abuja.
Alhaji Dantasoho, who also identified lack of professionalism among teachers as a major problem maintained that teachers who give in their best to teach students also produce quality persons which have contributed to nation biulding and development.
“Industrialized nations pay teachers high. There only the best go for teaching; only the best go to the class”.
“Teachers provide professionals. Teachers are key in all spheres of life. Teachers should play their role very well. You hold the key sector that determines the best in the society,” he said.
He also thrilled the audience when he observed that techers supposed to prepare the children for a successful life, noting that those who flog children with can are not doing their job well because teachers should have the ability to teach and inculcate knowledge on children even those that most people condider as lazy ones.
He explained further that “children believe teachers than they believe in their parents. Adding that teachers who teach well are asset not just for the school but for the whole country as what they taught children could also be Transfered into a lager society to make a decent nation and community.
While congratulating teachers for their success story, he reminded them of the need to always observe the ethics of teaching profession adding that children can only learn when they are emotionaly stable.
In his remarks, the national cordinator and the Registrar of Education Development Academy (EDA) Uwem Bassey explained that his organization is the only body now in the country that promote and project teachers training and retraining aimed at achieving professionalism.
Uwem noted with hapiness the success story of his establishment since inception pointing out that teachers performance has improved tremendously throughout the territory and beyond because of his group passion for teachers to achieve professionalism.
According to EDA registrar, ‘the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria(TRCN) and the Nigerian Union of Teachers(NUT) have approved regular trainning and retraining of all teachers in both private and public schools in Nigeria to be carry out by his organization..
In her own remarks at the event, a teacher, Adebisi Tokunbo who is the Director Quality Assurance EDA charged teachers to be passionate in their job despite the environment. “Let us do our best regardless of motivation. We will receive our rewards here in the earth and in Heaven.
She urged them to work hard to regain respect teachers commanded in the past. Teachers development is very important. I cannot spend six months without undergoing training. Don’t wait for the government develop yourself because things are changing.
The High point of the event was an election for the position of EDA President in the FCT, where Rita Bearnad emerged winner. Other are the Public Relation Officer as well as the Financial Secretary.
