Senior Special Assistant to the President on National Assembly matters (Senate), Senator Ita Enang has dismissed insinuations that the Executive arm does not obey resolutions emanating from the legislature.
Senator Enang at the Summit on the Legislative Network for Universal Health Coverage held at the Sheraton Hotels and Towers in Abuja, Thursday said the ongoing view by some segments of the Nigerian society of a conflict between the legislature and their executive counterparts was absolutely false.
“My view is that there is no conflicts, whatsoever. What is happening is legislative democratic activism,’’ said the presidential aide. He said Appropriation was an effective tool for the achievement of Universal Health Coverage.
“The HealthCare Act is about the executive and the legislature joining forces for the advancement of the wellbeing of the Nigerian people.’’
Earlier in the day, Senator Ita Enang was among hordes of dignitaries as the Acting President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo declared open the 16th Commonwealth Speakers and Presiding Conference (CSPOC) Africa Region.
Rt.Hon. Yakubu Dogara, Chairperson of CSPOC and Speaker of Nigeria’s House of Representatives said at the opening session that “Africa is in dire need of strong institutions and not strong men.’’
Dogara called on bonding through regional friendship in the continent. He stressed the need for parliaments to co-exist in the course of policy formulation in the interest of the people, adding that participants should seek ways of encouraging impartiality and fairness.
“The legislature and executive must corporate and work together as one government, serving the need of the people.’’
Nigeria’s Senate President, Senator Bukola Saraki said CSPOC has continued to aid the frontiers of democracy, 48 years after its formation.
Senator Saraki urged legislators in the continent to step up enlightenment of the public on its various roles in developing the society.
