President of the Senate, David Mark has applauded Nigeria’s election into the non-permanent seat of the United Nations (UN) Security Council saying it will further encourage the country’s active participation in promoting global peace.
An elated Mark said the overwhelming endorsement of Nigeria for the UN Security Council seat is a display of the world recognition of the nation’s activities in supporting and promoting peace, security and political stability in Africa and largely across the world.
He commended the present administration for throwing its weight behind Nigeria’s candidature and also thanked members-countries of the UN who deemed it fit that Nigeria should occupy the non-permanent seat in the council.
The Senate President stressed that the nation appreciates the unprecedented feat of occupying a seat in the UN Security Council while assuring that for the two year term, “Nigeria as a responsible nation will look forward to working with other brother nations to pursue the goal of a safer world.
“We would continue to promote preventive diplomacy for peace and other agenda at the council. This promise I affirmed during the just concluded Inter-Parliamentary Union, (IPU) conference in Geneva, Switzerland. That Nigeria is against any form of violence in any parts of the world. We are a very peaceful people and will support every move to ensure violence-free world.”
Mark assured of the National Assembly support and encouragement at all times for a successful outing for Nigeria at the UN Security Council non-permanent seat, his Media Adviser, Kola Ologbodiyan said.
