The Minister of Health, Prof. Isaac Adewole has called on the Senior Consultants in the Health sector to train younger ones with a view of closing the gaps that usually occurred as a result of exit of the senior consultants from the sector.
The Minister made the call while meeting with staff and management of Federal Medical Centre {FMC}, Umuahia, Abia State on the implementation of the Rapid Result Initiative (RRI) in the Hospital.
The Minister described FMC Umuahia as one of the Tertiary Institutions that has performed credibly in the execution of the Rapid Result Initiative programme of the Federal Government in 2016.
He commended Dr. EzeonwumeluChukwuemeka, a Consultant General Surgeon who operated on most of the free surgery beneficiaries in FMC Umuahia. The Minister added that in reward for his excellent performanceon the programme, the Federal Ministry of Health would recommend him for an international conference outside the country to give him more exposure on general surgeries.
The Minister called on Dr. Chukwuemeka and other Senior Consultants to train, share experience, information and ideas with the younger generation to increase their level of knowledge in the field.
Prof. Adewole said “thank you for outstanding work, we recognize you, the Permanent Secretary has offered to write you a letter of commendation,” the Minister said. “We must not only condemn what is bad but we must also appreciate what is good, thank you for your good work.”
“Please train and impact knowledge to others not only because you love them but because that is how you can protect yourself and your generation, if you refuseto train the upcoming generation, time would come that nobody would train your own” the Minister said.
The Ministerurged the staff to cooperate with the Medical Director in his quest to Provide quality healthcare to the people.“Thank you for key-in to the mission of Mr. President of caring of the poor, this administration is keen in looking after the poor, the rich can take care of themselves”
The Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Health, Mrs. BintaAdamu Bello in her remarks, appealed to the staff of the center to consider their patients first above their own self interests. “Work ethics is important in medical profession, please let us put our patients before self” She said.
Earlier the Medical Director of the Hospital Dr.ChukwuAbaliwho conducted the Hon. Minister of Health Prof. Adewole to inspect some facilities in the hospital said that despite the large number of patients they receive in Accident and Emergency Unit ( A&E)the Hospital has a policy to against denying patients care.He said his team always work hard to satisfy their patients and thanked the ministry for visiting the center.
