The National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) rose from its National Executive Council (NEC) meeting on Wednesday, vowing to carry on with its ongoing strike.
According to a communiqué issued, members said they would only return to work when their demands are met by the federal government.
The communiqué signed by NARD President Dr. Jubril Abdullahi and Acting Secretary General, Dr. Udu Chijoke Udu, accused government of not being serious about ending the strike.
They lamented that “government grossly fall short of the articulated demands”, adding that “all salaries and allowances of our members (House Members and Resident Doctors) must be paid in full with immediate effect.
“Government must release and implement the stakeholders’ agreement on residency training program of 5th and 6th July, 2013.”
The doctors are also demanding “elaborate investigation of alleged victimization” believed to have been perpetuated against their members at the Federal Medical Centre, Owerri, Imo State.
Failure on the part of government to address their demands, they vowed that “the ongoing indefinite withdrawal of services is to be sustained until the above demands are met.”
NARD President, Abdullahi posited that “this is not the first time we have been talking; we have met, signed agreements, yet nothing has change for more than forty years now.”
He accused top government functionaries of encouraging capital flight, wondering “they use money to go abroad, what about the poor who cannot afford” to go abroad for medical attention?”
