By Gracious Akujobi Head coach of Super Eagles, Stephen Keshi declared on Tuesday that the refurbished National stadium pitch is not good for football.
Keshi spoke after 18 Super Eagles players had their first training session on the pitch ahead of the crucial World Cup final round qualifier against Ethiopia.
He expressed displeasure over the standard of the pitch, pointing out that it would be dangerous for the Eagles to play on.
“From what I saw, it is a sandy pitch and it is so hard; it is very difficult for the players to play on, mostly the goalkeepers because it is sharp sand that was used on it.
“It is going to be very difficult to play on; it is not good for football players.
” If it rains, I think, the pitch will be water-logged; I am not sure this is the right approach.
“I don’t have to complain but I have the right to talk about it,’’ Keshi said.
Prompt News Online recalls that criticisms have trailed the renovation of the stadium pitch since it was handed over by the contractors, Julius Berger on Sept. 17.
The House of Representatives Committee on Sports led by Godfrey Gaiya had during an oversight function at the Abuja stadium also expressed dissatisfaction with the renovated pitch,
saying the N96.6 million spent to re-grass the pitch was “doubtful”.
