Following concerns being expressed by Nigerians on the accessibility of healthcare, the Executive Secretary, National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), Abdulrahman Sambo has assured that that the issues will be addressed.
To ensure comprehensive package, the NHIS boss also said the programme will soon be introduced in the informal sector, adding that details are being worked out.
He was speaking on Thursday at the opening of the NHIS Enrollee Forum in Abuja, as part of NHIS strategies to ensure that all stakeholders are regularly updated about the scheme and to get feedback from enrollees on their experiences.
According to Sambo, “The scheme is ever willing and committed to address your concerns in the areas of accessing healthcare through your various providers. As you all know, the NHIS is working round the clock to ensure that enrolles gain maximum satisfaction from services received from the system.
“The NHIS is not relenting in its effort to support the National Health System achieve its cardinal goal of improving the health status of Nigerians, through the provision of risk protection mechanisms against healthcare costs and improving access to health services of high quality to all.
“This scheme hopes to achieve through the development and implementation of various health insurance programmes to cover all citizens of the country. The formal Sector Programme, for which we are gathered here to share experiences about, is just one of such programmes and was the first to be launched and implemented since 2005.
“The other programmes are at various stages of development or implementation”.
He also assured Nigerians and beneficiaries that the “Scheme will continue to work to guarantee improvements in service delivery to our dear enrollees and foster the enabling environment for robust stakeholder interactions necessary for the smooth operation of the programme.
“This, we believe will reduce tensions and conflicts amongst the stakeholders and improve the desired satisfaction from the enrollees necessary for the sustenance of the Scheme”.
