            Pai Obayan

LAGOS – By Victoria Hanson     Nigerian Scholars have called on governments at all levels to invest in qualitative education, noting that education has been neglected in the country over the years.

They made at the 34th CVL leadership Without Title (LWT) in honour of Prof Pai Obanya (Emeritus Professor of Education University of Ibadan) as he clocks 77.

Speaking on the theme “Mission, Education And Nation Building “, Prof Gidado Tahir, a lecturer in University of Lagos, said that lack of qualitative leadership in Nigeria is a major factor that hinders quality education.

He explained that any leader who has foresight and who also believes that education can transform the society would take cognizance of it as the key to transform the society.

Prof Tahir also highlighted lack of resources, number of policies and the issue of nation building as other barriers of effective education in the country.

In order to change the face of education, he advised government and education stakeholders to change the Universities curriculum and inject innovation in terms of information communication technology.

He advised that intelligent university teachers must be employed into the system.

Prof Pat Utomi, founder of CVL, said that education is the biggest challenge in the country.

In his words, “Mission schools have been at the heart of modernization in most emerging societies.

“The truth is that a good part of the crisis of progress in Nigeria is the crisis of education and leadership.”
