Arrangements have been concluded to hold the third edition of the No Barriers Summer Basketball Camp for girls 2016 to be staged in Abuja at the indoor and outdoor courts of the Abuja National Stadium in Package B between July 30 and August 6.
The camp which started in 2014 is for girls within the ages of 8 and 18 and about 150 girls drawn from the FCT will be participating in this year’s edition.
Founder of the foundation, Mrs. Ada Mark Ogbole said the No Barriers 3-on-3 basketball competition for women is aimed at teaching sound basketball fundamentals in a conducive environment where campers will not only compete in the tournament but will also be taught life skills.
She said the camp sanctioned by the Nigeria Basketball Federation will teach the rudiments of basketball between the hours of 8am and 3pm while classes on being a girl will hold to discuss topics like decision making skills, menstruation, puberty, healthy friendships and sexually transmitted infections. “The camp is open to girls ages 8 to 18 and is expected that 150 girls shall benefit from the programme. All campers will be grouped according to age and ability.”
Speaking on the mode of the tournament, she said, “This tournament uses the same principles and concepts of regulation basketball except that it is played on half court with only six players on the floor. This form helps and provides for a more recreational type of athlete to stay involved in this great sport. Our variation of one male in the team is not only inclusive but brings more excitement to the game and it therefore provides fun in a competitive learning environment for all players,” she concluded.
