As the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) intensifies investigation into the disbursement of $2.1 billion meant for purchase of arms, no document has yet been traced to former President Goodluck Jonathan as authorizing diversion of the funds.
The acting chairman of EFCC Ibrahim Magu, on Monday disclosed this while offering explanation on why the former President has not been invited yet for interrogation.
The money meant for arms purchase was said to have been diverted by the Office of former National Security Adviser, retired Colonel Sambo Dasuki, for political purposes ahead of the 2015 general elections.
Mr. Magu said there has not been any document suggesting that Jonathan authorized diversion of the $2.1 billion which he approved for purchase of arms to fight insurgency.
According to the EFCC boss who interacted with online news publishers under the aegis of the Guild of Corporate Online Publishers on Monday in Lagos, all those questioned so far in connection with the money were people who disbursed or collected it for reasons other than the purchase of arms and ammunition.
“All approvals by former President Jonathan did not mention that it was for political purposes.
“All the memos approved by him were for the purchase of arms,” Magu said.
Apart from the former NSA Dasuki that was arrested, prominent politicians and a media mogul, Raymond Dokpesi, have been arrested as beneficiaries of the money.
Some political parties who did not field presidential candidates in the 2015 general elections also benefitted from the funds superintended by the former NSA.
Prompt News recalls that the leaders of the Accord Party, Rashidi Ladoja and Social Democratic Party (SDP), Olu Falae, were said to have collected N100 million each on behalf of their respective political parties.
Also, the National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Olisa Metuh, is currently being detained by the EFCC as the sum of N400 million is said to have been traced to his account.
