More influential Nigerians who have been linked to corrupt practices would soon be arrested and arraigned in court, the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ibrahim Magu, said on Wednesday.
Mr. Magu also assured that Nigerians would be kept abreast of all ongoing investigations by the commission.
The EFCC boss, who disclosed this during an interactive session with Online Publishers and broadcast personalities in Abuja, said “As we speak, many more influential Nigerians are on the radar of the EFCC and, in the coming weeks, they would have their days in court”.
He said since assumption of office in the last two months, he has approached the job with renewed vigour by re-ordering the commission’s priorities.
According to him, “The effect of this, which is obvious for all to see is the investigation, arrest and prosecution of some of the most powerful forces in Nigeria, who have questions to answer on their stewardship whilst in office.
“A former National Security Adviser, former ministers, former governors, serving and retired military men, a media mogul and several others are among those we have called to answer critical questions posed as to the management of our commonwealth,” he said.
Mr. Magu, therefore, vowed that no Nigerian would be treated as sacred cow as far as the fight against corruption was concerned, expressing delight that he has the “backing of all the arms of government”.
He however called on the media especially the Online Publishers to partner with the commission by blowing the whistle when necessary.
“The media occupy a vantage position to help or hamper the war on corruption in Nigeria. I quite appreciate the importance of the media as a vehicle for social transformation.
“The EFCC needs you; Nigeria needs your critical support if we are to make any headway in this important campaign against corruption.
“My plea for your support is underscored by my understanding that the forces which we are battling are powerful and some of them may want to use all platforms of the media to distract and derail us.
“If and when they do come to you, please, allow the ethics of your profession, your conscience and overriding national interest be your guide,” the EFCC boss appealed.
