A yet-to-be-identified motorcyclist has been killed after a trailer crushed him on Oyinmo Road in Ikare-Akoko, Akoko South-West Local Government Area of Ondo State.
The accident occurred on Tuesday, triggering anger among residents who blocked the road and restricted motorists to slow movement in protest.
An eyewitness, Saheed, said the motorcyclist was knocked into the path of the oncoming trailer by another vehicle.
He said the impact left the motorcyclist trapped under the trailer, while the driver of the vehicle that initially hit him fled the scene.
Saheed said some residents immediately gave chase in an attempt to apprehend the fleeing driver.
“Another driver hit a motorcyclist into the path of an oncoming trailer, which then crushed him. Unfortunately, the motorcyclist died. The driver fled, but some residents went after him,” he said.
A resident, Akadri Ayodeji, appealed to the Ondo State Government to prevail on the contractor handling the Ikare road project to accelerate the construction work.
Ayodeji said the continued use of Oyinmo Road as an alternative route had increased the pressure on the narrow road, which he described as a street route originally meant to accommodate only limited traffic.
He said completing the dualisation of the major road would reduce the pressure on alternative routes and help prevent further accidents.
