Ride-hailing giant, Uber, has announced its withdrawal from the Nigerian market, bringing an end to its 12-year operation in the country.
The company said its decision took effect on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, following what it described as a comprehensive review of its business.
Uber disclosed this in a message to customers on Wednesday, expressing regret over the decision and apologising for the disruption it may cause.
“After a thorough review of our business, we have made the tough decision to wind down our operations in Nigeria, effective 2 September 2026,” the company said.
Uber commenced operations in Nigeria in 2014, launching its first service in Lagos and subsequently becoming a major part of the urban transportation system in the country.
The company said it was grateful to Nigerians who had used its platform over the years to connect with drivers for their daily transportation needs.
“Since we first launched in Lagos in 2014, it has been an absolute privilege to be a part of your daily life connecting you with independent transportation providers,” Uber stated.
It recalled how customers had relied on the platform for daily commutes, trips to meet relatives and friends, and movement around the city.
The company acknowledged that its exit could affect customers who had incorporated the service into their daily routines.
“We know this may cause disruption to your routine, and we sincerely apologise for the inconvenience,” Uber said.
The ride-hailing firm further announced that its help centre would continue to operate until September 23 to handle customers’ final account-related enquiries.
