Eleven cows and a yet-to-be-identified herder have reportedly been killed in a road crash involving a Mercedes-Benz car and a herd of cattle in Rivers State.
The incident occurred on Thursday at Evekwu, Rumuodogu, along the East-West Road in Emohua Local Government Area of the state.
It was gathered that the cattle were crossing the highway when the vehicle, reportedly travelling at high speed, rammed into the herd and the herders.
The impact reportedly killed 11 cows, while one of the herders died in the incident.
An eyewitness said the occupants of the Mercedes-Benz were travelling in a convoy and allegedly abandoned the damaged vehicle after the crash.
The source said they reportedly joined another vehicle in the convoy and left the scene before the arrival of security personnel.
Police officers from the Emohua Division were said to have responded to the incident, with the body of the deceased taken away for burial by his relatives.
Another herder who sustained injuries was evacuated to a hospital, where he was said to be responding to treatment.
A video obtained after the incident showed several dead cows lying in the bush close to the highway, while some individuals were seen around another animal.
Confirming the incident, the spokesperson for the Rivers State Police Command, Blessing Agabe, said an investigation had commenced.
Agabe, an Assistant Superintendent of Police, said one of the herders died while another sustained injuries and was taken to hospital.
She added that the driver of the Mercedes-Benz had fled before the arrival of the police.
“I can confirm the incident. One of them died. The other was injured and was rushed to the hospital. He is now stable,” she stated.
Agabe explained that the victim’s relatives had taken away the corpse before police personnel arrived at the scene, while the injured cattle rearer remained in hospital.
