Celtic manager Martin O’Neill has confirmed the Scottish champions are working on a deal to keep Nigerian striker Kelechi Iheanacho at the club, Prompt News Online reports.
Iheanacho joined the Hoops on a free transfer last summer following his departure from La Liga outfit Sevilla.
The 29-year-old signed a one-year contract on his arrival at Celtic Park, with the club retaining the option to extend the deal by a further 12 months.
The experienced forward was instrumental in Celtic’s domestic double triumph last season, delivering several decisive performances throughout the campaign.
Iheanacho proved particularly influential in the Scottish Premiership, scoring dramatic late winners against Kilmarnock, Dundee, Hibernian and Motherwell.
Those four match-winning strikes secured 12 valuable league points for the Bhoys as they successfully defended their title.
“I’d like to do something with him, (Iheanacho)” O’Neill was quoted by Celtic Way.
“If we can do something relatively quickly, at least he then gets started in pre-season, which is really important for him. It’s something he didn’t have last year.
“So that would be nice. I’m definitely pursuing that at this minute.
“He won’t be in Portugal with us, but we are talking to his agent now at this moment. I would like to have him.”
