No fewer than 11 persons have died in a tragic road accident after a vehicle plunged off the Eruku Bridge along the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway in Ogun State.
The Federal Road Safety Corps confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Sunday by the spokesperson for the Ogun State Sector Command, Afolabi Odunsi.
According to the statement, the crash occurred late Saturday night and involved a gold Toyota vehicle with registration number GGE722KJ.
Odunsi disclosed that the vehicle reportedly somersaulted before plunging off the bridge, trapping all occupants inside after the doors became locked on impact.
He said all 11 passengers in the vehicle, comprising 10 adult males and one adult female, lost their lives in the accident.
“The incident involved a gold Toyota vehicle which somersaulted and fell off the bridge, trapping the occupants inside as the doors locked upon impact,” the statement read.
The FRSC spokesman explained that rescue operatives from the Itori Unit Command were immediately mobilised to the scene following distress calls.
He added that officials of the corps, assisted by residents of the area, dismantled parts of the wrecked vehicle to recover the bodies of the victims.
According to him, the remains of the deceased were deposited at the State Specialist Hospital morgue in Ifo.
Odunsi noted that preliminary findings indicated that driving under the influence of alcohol and overloading may have contributed to the fatal crash.

He also warned drivers against speeding, drunk driving and overloading, stressing the need for strict compliance with road safety regulations.
