The Oyo State Police Command has foiled an attempted robbery operation in Iseyin, killing one suspected robber and arresting two others during a fierce exchange of gunfire.
The command disclosed that the incident occurred around 2am along Saki Road in Iseyin after security operatives received credible intelligence about an ongoing robbery attack at a residential building.
In a statement issued on Wednesday by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ayanlade Olayinka, detectives were swiftly mobilised to the area to prevent the attack and restore calm.
According to the police, preliminary findings showed that about five armed men stormed the residence, which had reportedly been attacked by robbers earlier in February.
The statement noted that the private security guard attached to the residence engaged the hoodlums in a gun duel before the arrival of the police team.
During the confrontation, one of the suspects was shot dead, while two others identified as Ali Umar and Mohammed Usman were arrested at the scene.
The remaining gang members reportedly escaped with gunshot wounds.
The police said exhibits recovered from the suspects included a cut-to-size locally fabricated gun, one expended cartridge, one live cartridge, five mobile phones, two power banks and cash suspected to be proceeds of criminal activities.
The corpse of the deceased suspect has been deposited at a mortuary, while the arrested suspects remain in police custody for further interrogation.
The command added that following the arrests, several victims of previous robbery incidents in the area had provided useful information linking the suspects to other criminal operations.
“One of the victims of an earlier robbery attack positively identified the suspects as members of the gang that attacked his residence on April 13, 2026,” the statement said.
The police further disclosed that the case file, suspects and recovered exhibits had been transferred to the Command Monitoring Unit for a thorough investigation and possible arrest of other fleeing members of the gang.
The Commissioner of Police in the state, Abimbola Ayodeji Olugbenga, commended local security operatives and residents for providing timely information that aided the success of the operation.
He reaffirmed the command’s commitment to intelligence-driven policing and sustained efforts to safeguard lives and property across the state.
